Toyota Mirai
FIRST DRIVE REVIEW

2019 Mirai

For commuters who live in a region where the hydrogen fueling infrastructure is already built out, opting for the 2019 Toyota Mirai may make a lot of sense. For starters, it's a genuinely futuristic experience since the Mirai is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell that converts the stuff of stars into electricity and water. This electricity goes to a small battery that drives the motor while the water leaves the tailpipe as vapor.

Advantages of Buying a New or Toyota 86

It's easy to pick on the 2019 Toyota 86 and count the ways it falls just short of excellent. It's small inside. There's limited passenger and cargo space. It's not particularly comfortable, especially for taller drivers, and its technology feels dated and inadequate.

Less attuned to four-wheeling are the standard Dunlop Grandtrek AT23 tires. Although the all-season rubber lacks the knobby tread needed to properly tackle muddy trails and mountainsides, they helped this Land Cruiser stick to the tarmac around our 300-foot skidpad to the tune of 0.74 g and assisted in bringing it to a stop from 70 mph in 183 feet. Given that the last Mercedes-Benz G550 we tested managed just 0.56 g and needed 191 feet to stop from 70 mph, the Toyota’s performance is impressive.
In North America, the Land Cruiser 200 series is offered with one trim level and engine, the 5.7 L 3UR-FE V8 petrol engine producing 284 kW (386 PS; 381 hp) and 544 N⋅m (401 lb⋅ft) of torque channeled through a six-speed automatic. Towing is rated at 3,700 kg (8,200 lb). Beige or black leather upholstery is standard along with a 14 speaker JBL sound system. The only wheel choice is 18 in (460 mm) allowing a lot of sidewall so the vehicle can be driven off-road without modification though a more aggressive tread pattern is advised for deep mud.
With real doors, roll-down windows and available air conditioning, the 20 series brought the BJ-era Land Cruiser into civilian life. But a subtle design trait on the dashboard foretold Land Cruiser's future: the glove box and instrument panel were identically shaped and interchangeable, making manufacturing a left-hand- or right-hand-drive version equally easy. For Toyota, foreign markets were the new target.
The Land Cruiser 80 series was unveiled in October 1989 at the Tokyo Motor Show and launched in early 1990. It had swing-out back doors, which were replaced by a tailgate and hatch in 1994. The Land Cruiser was nicknamed the Burbuja (Bubble) in Colombia and Venezuela due to its roundness. The J80 was initially offered in two versions in these countries: the fully loaded VX and an entry level model that included a vinyl interior with optional air conditioning. In 1996, the entry model was upgraded to a medium equipped model named Autana, including cloth upholstery, standard air conditioning and power driver seat. The name is a reference to the Tepui mesa Autana, a spectacular plateau and cave system along the Guiana Shield craton. Land Cruiser sales reached 2 million vehicles.

The 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition, only offered as a two-row model to maximize cargo capacity, is dressed elegantly for the occasion. The choice of Midnight Black Metallic or Blizzard Pearl exterior color is uniquely styled with a black-accented grille and bronze-colored BBS 18 x 8.0-inch forged aluminum wheels featuring a “TOYOTA” center cap. A vintage-style Land Cruiser exterior badge evokes the vehicle’s long, accomplished history in an understated way.
The introduction of a V8 engine was also a first for a Land Cruiser, and was specifically intended to improve sales in the North-American market, where it was the only engine available. In Australia, the 100 V8 was initially only available in the range-topping GXV model, while entry and mid-range models were the 105 powered by the 1FZ-FE I6 petrol, or 1HZ diesel engines. The new 1HD-FTE turbo-diesel 100 was added to the Australian range in October 2000 after being available in Europe and the UK since the vehicle's launch in 1998. The automotive press in Australia were critical of Toyota's decision to offer the acclaimed 1HD-FTE engine only in combination with IFS. Australian 4WD Monthly magazine stated "We will never forgive Toyota for going independent at the front with the mighty 4.2 turbo-diesel".
As of 2018, the Land Cruiser (J200) is available in most markets. Exceptions include Canada, Malaysia (which have the Lexus LX available), Hong Kong, Macau, North Korea, Singapore, South Korea, Brazil, Syria, Thailand and large parts of Europe. In Europe, the only countries that officially sell the Land Cruiser are: Gibraltar, Iceland, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
Passing performance improved by a tenth of a second, with this Land Cruiser scooting from 30 to 50 mph in 3.8 seconds and from 50 to 70 mph in 5.0 ticks. Such swiftness does come at a cost, and the Land Cruiser swills fuel as ravenously as Barney Gumble downs Duff beer. We saw 13 mpg over 1100 miles of driving, matching the EPA city rating, and averaged 17 mpg on our 75-mph fuel-economy test—1 mpg below the EPA highway estimate.

The Land Cruiser 60 series was produced from 1980 through 1990 for most markets but the Cumana Plant in Venezuela continued production until 1992 for their local market. It is a front engine, four door wagon which can seat five to eight[citation needed] people. Like all of the Land Cruiser generations, it is well known in the off-road world for its off-road abilities but was somewhat limited by its awkward departure angles.[citation needed] The 60 series was available in the following exterior colours: Alpine White, Brown, Desert Beige, Freeborn Red, Royal Blue; and in the following metallic exterior colours: Charcoal Gray, Cognac, Gray-Blue, Rootbeer, Sky Blue, Stardust Silver.

The 2020 Heritage Edition features Land Cruiser’s full complement of amenities, including ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel with power tilt and telescoping and memory, power moonroof, four-zone automatic climate control with 28 cabin air vents, and Smart Key keyless entry with push-button start. For additional storage options, the Heritage Edition removes the cool box in the center console of the front seat.
The Land Cruiser traces its origins to the 1951 BJ, Toyota’s bid to produce a small 4WD military vehicle. It was not chosen but went on to become the first motor vehicle to reach the sixth station on the trail to the top of Mt. Fuji. The BJ became the Land Cruiser in 1954, and an updated model, the 20-Series, was one of the first Toyota exports to the United States in 1958. The next Land Cruiser iteration, the 40-Series (a.k.a. FJ-40), arrived in 1960 and became an all-terrain icon (and now a collector’s item). A larger station wagon model followed in the late-1960s, putting the Land Cruiser on a path toward family adventures.
Whether you are looking for a sedan such as the 2018 Corolla or its Hatchback version, the Corolla iM, a mid-size like the 2018 Camry or a compact SUV in the same vein as the all-new 2018 Toyota C-HR, at Spinelli, you will find the vehicle that perfectly suits your lifestyle and your budget. Take this opportunity to find out more about our ongoing Toyota promotions and enjoy great savings!
All Land Cruiser models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P). Using millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor to detect a preceding pedestrian or a preceding vehicle, TSS-P Pre-Collision System is designed to automatically apply braking if necessary to help mitigate or avoid collisions in certain conditions. The system includes Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Automatic High Beams.
Despite the 100 and 105 bodies being very similar, there are some exterior visual indications between both models. The most obvious is the front end of the vehicle often appearing lower than the rear on the 100 models, due to the IFS. The other indicator is the design of the wheels. The 100 models have almost flat wheel designs, while the 105 models have dished wheels. This difference allows both versions to retain similar wheel tracks, despite the 100 having a relatively wider axle track to allow for the IFS system.
1990 – The 80 series station wagon was introduced, replacing the 60 series. All 80s sold in North America and Europe now have a full-time four-wheel drive system. In Japan, Africa, and Australia, a part-time system was still available. 80s produced between 1990 and 1991 had an open centre differential which was lockable in 4HI and automatically locked in 4LO. From 1992 onward, vehicles with anti-lock brakes had a viscous coupling that sent a maximum of 30% torque to the non-slipping axle. The differential was lockable in 4HI and automatically locked in 4LO.
The Land Cruiser 55 was produced from 1967 to 1980. Toyota refers to the FJ55G and FJ55V as the first "real" station wagon in the Land Cruiser series, thus marking the beginning of the station wagon bodystyle. It was the first Land Cruiser to have fully enclosed box frame members. Of all the Land Cruiser wagons sold in the U.S., including the FJ45, it is the only one to not have hatch and tailgate in the rear, but rather a tailgate only with an electrically operated window that can be retracted into the tailgate.[19]
1997 – A total of 4,744 FZJ80 Land Cruisers were sold in the United States as "40th Anniversary Limited Edition" models. They were available in 2 colours; Antique Sage Pearl (often referred to as Riverrock, Pewter, or Grey) and Emerald Green. The 40th Anniversary models included apron badges, a serial number badge on the centre console, black pearl exterior badges, "40th Anniversary Limited Edition" embroidered floor mats, automatic climate control, two-tone tan and brown leather interiors, and wheels with the "D" windows painted dark gray. Many were manufactured with the optional electric front and rear locking differentials, keyless entry, port-installed roof racks and running boards. There are some examples that did not have many of these optional extras. This was the last year for the electric locking front differentials.
This Toyota’s interior and its build quality live up to the rig’s high cost of entry, however. Items such as the door pulls and the power-window switches move with a weightiness that’s far beyond those of typical Toyota-badged products. Additionally, every Land Cruiser comes well equipped with features including LED headlights, a proximity key with push-button start, leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, four-zone automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and blind-spot monitoring. Our test truck’s only extra item was a $225 set of carpeted floor and cargo mats.
There’s plenty of torque to go around, as the Land Cruiser’s 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 produces 361 lb-ft of the stuff at 2200 rpm; goose the engine to 3600 rpm and it delivers 401 lb-ft. All that grunt benefits the Land Cruiser on-road as much as it does off-road. In our testing, the 5934-pound SUV made its way to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and completed the quarter-mile after 15.1 seconds at 93 mph. Both times were identical to those of a Land Cruiser we tested nearly two years ago. Toyota’s flagship SUV is nothing if not consistent. (A restored and modernized 1981 FJ43 Land Cruiser that we tested in recent months was slower than that but not nearly as slothlike as it would’ve been with its original powertrain.)
1955 – The Second generation of the Land Cruiser called the 20 Series was introduced. It was designed to have a more civilian appeal than the BJ for export reasons. It also had more stylish bodywork and a better ride courtesy of longer four-plate leaf springs which had been adapted from the Toyota Light Truck. It had a more powerful 99 kW (135 PS; 133 hp) 3.9 L six-cylinder Type F petrol engine, but adopted the previous generation's three speed gearbox. The interior of the vehicles were made more comfortable by moving the engine 120 mm (4.7 in) forward. The 20 Series still had no low range transfer case, but had synchronism on the third and fourth gears.[citation needed]
At your Toyota dealership in the West Island of Montreal, you will also find a large choice of compact vehicles, such as the new Yaris Sedan or Yaris Hatchback. We also have several pickups and SUVs like the new RAV4, the 2018 Tacoma or the imposing 2018 Highlander. Your style is more eco-friendly? Take a look at our inventory of hybrid vehicles, suitable to all needs. From the Prius to the Camry Hybrid, there is something for everyone that wishes to do their part for the environment!

As if following the creed of the United States Postal Service, the Land Cruiser is seemingly unaffected by snow or rain or heat or gloom of night thanks to a full suite of four-wheel-drive tools, which includes a two-speed transfer case and a Torsen-type limited-slip center differential that defaults to sending 60 percent of the engine’s torque rearward and 40 percent forward.

1993 – An advanced 24-valve, 4.5 L six-cylinder petrol engine, 1FZ-FE was introduced. Larger brakes were added from October 1992 and the total wheelbase was made slightly longer. Front and rear axle lockers (code k294) were available as an option. The High Pinion Electric Locking front differential become available in the US models. In May 1993, Toyota began using R134 refrigerant in the air conditioning system. Serial numbers lower than JT3DJ81xxxxx38947 use the R12 refrigerant.

Too pricey to appeal to the Chevrolet Tahoe crowd and too mundane to drum up support from Cadillac Escalade fans, the Land Cruiser attracts a narrow audience in search of a luxury SUV with true off-road capability in an unassuming wrapper. It’s a small but loyal fan base that has helped keep this nameplate around for longer than most SUV shoppers have been alive, and we’re glad this Toyota continues to cruise on.

The VDJ79 is an evolution of the 70 series Land Cruiser that was first introduced in late 1984. Though never offered in the United States, the 70 series is the true inheritor of the FJ40's no-nonsense spirit. Light and compact compared with its 60 and 80 series contemporaries, the 70 series has always maintained a strong emphasis on capability over creature comfort. Its rugged, simple sensibilities have helped to keep it in production for over 20 years.

1954 — The name "Land Cruiser" was coined by the technical director Hanji Umehara. "In England we had another competitor — Land Rover. I had to come up with a name for our car that would not sound less dignified than those of our competitors. That is why I decided to call it 'Land Cruiser'," he recalls.[9] The name had already been used on the Studebaker Land Cruiser which was produced from 1934 to 1954.
